Thinking about the timing of transits can make my head hurt which is why I write about them frequently in an ongoing effort to understand them. Synastry is much easier for me to get my head around and judging from the feedback from those I have done compatibility readings for my intuitive leaps work well. But transits always seem much more left brain and have so many, many picky rules to follow.I have read what both Betty Lundsted and Bernadette Brady have to say about transits and while I’ve learned a great deal from both of them, I find Betty’s ideas easier to implement. When Bernadette starts talking making these little boxes, I start to glaze over. Betty has a general rule of thumb on using a ten degree applying orb for transits from Jupiter on out to Pluto – simple, easy to understand and it works for me!
In general we feel most transits during the period when a planet is drawing closer to aspecting a natal planet or Angle. After the aspect is exact by degree, then the transit enters the separating phase. However it’s not always that tidy because if the transiting planet is triggering a natal aspect pattern then the affect of the transit can reverberate longer. For example, your 20˚ Aries Moon is square natally to Uranus at 26˚ Cancer and transiting Mars in Aries is coming along to conjoin your Moon. Mars irritates the Moon so you would probably start feeling this transit when Mars hit 10˚ Aries. Even after Mars exactly conjoins your Moon, it will still be another twelve days or so before it exactly squares your Uranus and will still be irritating your Moon via the natal Moon-Uranus square. So check your natal aspect patterns for the later degrees and use those to determine the end of a transit.
I was really annoyed when I woke up with this particular realization, so I decided to share it! What I’m wondering now is if anyone else can corroborate this.
Image: A selection of this year's peonies from my garden. My new favorite is the one on the right hand side of the photo. It's white in the center with a blush of pink to the outer petals. Libra to the core!

I love the pitcher and the whole picture (pronounced pitcher!)... :-)
as for synastry and my own current relationship, i am still keeping in mind (and honoring) the last piece of advice you gave me...
ten degrees seems pretty wide to me for planets that move so slowly, but I can see it. perhaps it's like a train coming; perhaps ten degrees is when you begin to hear the whistle, three is when you'd damned well better get off the tracks if you haven't already.

ha hahahaha haha ....... love it!!!
Thanks, Jane! Us Libra types gotta have our "pretties". :-)
Glad to know someone is using the info that pops out of my brain! I'm not all that good on following my own advice. LOL
Hey Satori!! Thanks for stopping by!! :-D

ROFL! Great analogy!! Uranus knocked my butt off the track a time or two or three . . . oh heck, i quit counting.
The ten degree orb works best for Mars thru Saturn. Uranus seems to make up it's own rules for each individual and Neptune ALWAYS sneaks up on me [usually don't even notice them until they are exact to the degree]. Pluto transits last so long they feel like you have your feet glued to the road and one of those giant rollers is creeping up on you!
As a matter of fact, I am not at all fond of predictive astrology mostly because I have given up attempting to control my life and prefer to do my best to take each day as it comes. That works some of the time and I worry the rest of the time.
neith, i'm eating jello! and hating every minute, lol

Ha, Ha, Ha!! but is it staying down?! there are some new flavors that aren't so bad . . . :-)
yeah, ten degrees seems pretty wide to me to. I always thought it was 3-4 degrees for transits. Good train analogy though. hee!
neith, what are your thoughts on Scorpio rising/shyness/and the best way to handle a child suffering from both?
And say what you will about all the current planetary influences, nothing has seemed so intense as Pluto entering Capricorn. Or maybe I'm just focusing on this more...eco-freaks...
neith, what are your thoughts on Scorpio rising/shyness/and the best way to handle a child suffering from both?
I was very shy as a child but at the same time, very self-contained. Scorpio rising does give a certain wariness or reserve, especially when encountering new people and situations. If given time to think it over from the sidelines and gradually get used to new people, your little one will come around. Forcing the child forward is NOT a good idea. All that fixed sign stubbornness comes to the fore . . . :-) Curiosity will also lure them out of hiding.
What amazes me is how sociable and friendly my Gemini rising granddaughter is.
Pluto entering Capricorn is just beginning to cause reverberations around the planet. Wait till next year when Uranus moves into Aries - hot times ahead!
Jeff Jawer over on StarIQ has a great post on Pluto in Capricorn and Capitalism.
Pluto in Capricorn and a Forbidden Subject
Capitalism is a HUGE sacred cow in this country and it will be fascinating watching what happens over the next few years. Painful, but fascinating . . . :-)
Love the peonies, thank you for sharing.
10 degrees, has been working all my life for my transits, progressions. I believe that orb works. Watching transits, does make you eyes cross.. Enjoyed the article as always.
I think each chart has its own speed, like metabolism, especially with the personal planets. Your careful wording, Neith, about planets in aspect but not to the degree, is like the science behind the speed I think. With the outer planets,I think Saturn transits build up slowly and methodically (Capricorn style), Whereas Pluto is more like a minimum amount of deep and strategically placed punches during near to the exact timing of the transit (Scorpio style).

Thank you very much for your feedback on this! It may be a matter of paying attention and sensitivity too. We astrologers who are the ones who really care about this . . . :-D
Welcome, Deirdre! Always love having another astrologer stop by and add to the discussions here.

Excellent points and I very much agree. A strongly cardinal chart is definitely going to react very differently than one with lots of fixed signs for instance.

heh, no kidding!! Been on the receiving of both and can attest to the accuracy of what you are saying.
