In April of this year, I will begin the year long transit of Uranus squaring my natal Uranus. This is another of the major life cycle transits like Saturn Returns, etc. Stephen Arroyo describes Uranus transits in general as periods when we realize we have outgrown an old way of thinking and being, and Uranus to Uranus transits mark the periods of major shifts. The first Uranus/Uranus square is around 20-21 yrs when we break free to become truly aware of ourselves as individuals, the Uranus/Uranus opposition in the early 40’s is often referred to as the Mid-Life Crisis and this one in the early 60’s is when most people start thinking of retiring. Of course, we all do Uranus at our own pace and style . . .Natally my Sun and Moon are both trine to Uranus giving me an affinity with Uranus and I am usually pretty good at anticipating the changes most Uranus transits precipitate. (This past year when Uranus was inconjunct my Moon by transit, it was a little more difficult mostly due to the uneven nature of the Inconjunct.) Uranus has been within about 5-8° waxing orb of the square for the past year and will be making the first exact pass in April ’08. Late last year I retired from my day job, a typical response to this transit, and have been putting energy into a very Uranian pursuit – Astrology!
Looking at the chart for the first exact pass, Uranus in Pisces forms a Grand Trine in Water with transiting Mars in Cancer and my natal Mars/Mercury in Scorpio. The Houses are the 4th, 8th, and 12th, all Water Houses suggesting I will be able to move through this transition with a modicum of ease. I’d venture to say this is not a typical Uranus square Uranus rite of passage. If someone is heavily invested in their career or public life, this transition can be very difficult. It is not unusual for men in particular to identify so strongly with their jobs they develop serious health problems and depression after retirement.
My Aquarius aunt did a very Aquarian twist in response to this transit. When she was 62 she went back to work part time at the local public library and worked there for the next 7 years. That is an example of the contrarian nature of the Uranus ruled! They go zipping off left when everyone else is going right. Most people are leaving the work force during this transit.
I dug around and read what I could find on the second Uranus square Uranus transit which wasn’t much. Most interpretations talk about withdrawing and caution against depression from feeling left out of the main flow of society, blah, blah, blah. I’m sure we’ll be getting a much more positive message appearing in the astro-blogosphere over the next year or so as the Boomers start hitting this point in larger numbers. I see this phase as time to move past old models and start developing new ones better suited to the active, generally healthy sorts we are. Shoot, I’m just getting going in my study of astrology!! :-D
Note how blue the trees in the background appear. We have Mercury conjuncting Neptune three times in the upcoming Mercury Rx and we may be seeing a lot of "blue" trees . . . :-)

How interesting!
I really enjoyed your remark about how articles will start to bloom when the Boomers get to that age. It's amazing how something like that is still so relevant today.
I'm still having my first Uranus square (well, it's already 5 degrees separating - interestingly enough it is EXACTLY the same degrees separating from my Uranus and approximating to my Sun and Jupiter, right in the middle of the journey).
I guess I'm also going my separate ways from most of my colleagues, studying Astrology, not following my area of work exactly. But this transit happens to entire generations so I don't know how they can all go against the order or the trend - you see? ;)
I'm sure there will be different views on the 2nd square soon, as nowadays retirement is very distinct from what it was 20 years ago. Over here at least retirement comes later than it used to.

Like exactly squaring your Nodal axis?! =evil grin= I would consider you officially past your Uranus/Uranus square though.
Yes, this is one of those generational aspects but it makes a big difference how a person's natal Uranus operates in their chart. You have lots of aspects from Uranus to personal planets, so astrology is a natural interest for you. People who have an essentially unaspected Uranus tend to be blindsided by Uranus transits because of the lack of reference points.

Most people retire from 65 t0 72 in this country. However, I've followed a different path all my life and seldom worked in "regular" jobs so I'm kinda out of the norm! la, la, la!! :-)
Jesus, I completely forgot about the Nodes! This is big!!! Thanks for waking me up from my distractions.
Wow, no wonder I turned to this direction now...
I'm not a fan of regular jobs so you're my idol :)
My mom (Aries with moon in Aquarius) also returned to work when she was around 60. Some man commented on her beautiful garden and the next thing she knew she was at it 30 hours a week.
She stayed home raising the kids for 30 years before that.
Thanks for a great post.
Amazing photography of the night sky, from around the world.
The World At Night
I almost wonder if some of those World At Night photos are enhanced, but they are breath-taking nevertheless...
Hi~I wrote an article on mid-life Uranus transits on my site: www.elizabethspring.com called "When I'm Sixty-three" Although it talks mostly about this later life transit it also brings in all of them and the piece is called "When I'm Sixty-three" Yes, I know a touch of the Beatles there.......should be sixty-four I guess....anyway....I think there's a lot more positive and exciting energy to Uranus than most of us give it credit for, although I think you, Neith, do your Uranus brilliantly! ~elizabeth
Hi! Thanks for posting this! I'm going thru my Uranus/Uranus opposition now thru 2/23/08 --and this transit's *new* to me! ;)
Thx again!

Yes, it was a couple of years ago when Uranus first squared my Nodes and catapulted me into the astro-blogosphere . . . and here you are emerging in a whole new way! Astrology rocks . . . :-)

Joe, these photos are WONDERFUL!! And I know just enough about photography to realize you need a very, very good camera & tripod to get any kind of photo at night . . . I have the feeling I will be contacting one of the photographers about using a photo at some point! Thanks!! :-D

I stopped over and read this article (when i'm sixty-three) and it's great!! We see a lot more on Saturn Returns mostly because they usually ask for lots of booooring old work but Uranus cycles are just as important and IMO critical to understanding who we are as individuals. Natally Uranus is right on my 8th House cusp using the Koch House system and considering that i chose to be very open about living with my boyfriends during the 1st Uranus/Uranus transit, that may be the most accurate placement. i know I was much more aware of the ramifications of being sexually active than my peer group for sure.

Hi Sabrina! This is a very important transit for the Uranus in Virgo folks and it's one most of us remember quite well. I was living in San Diego at the time and ended moving myself & my belongings abruptly back to Washington State (made the decision and moved within a 2-3 month time frame). Those folks who have been denying what makes them unique usually end up with lots of surprises . . . :-D

Well that fits for a Moon in Aquarius person! Are you the youngest in your family? From things you've said, it would appear your folks were older when you were born . . .
Bet your Aries mom was happier too!
Being just a few years behind you I will be following with interest your progress with the second Uranus/Uranus square, starting in April. I wouldn't have though it could be anything other than exciting and interesting. Astrology (and blogging ....) seems like a really good path for you to follow.
Uranus is the highest planet in my chart, conjunct the MC and square the Asc/Desc axis.I have no intention of retiring - financially it won't be possible anyway - but like you imagine/hope that I will be working in less conventional areas of life.
We won't even talk about relationships - transiting Uranus will have just entered my 7th house .....

Indeed, I believe we will see more people looking for ways to stay afloat financially more aligned with their inner selves. Uranus is very good at creative solutions and with Pluto in Capricorn teaching lessons in frugal living, we may just come right yet!
I just found your site - I too have a transiting Uranus in Pisces about to square my natal 23 Gemini Uranus, which is conjunct Venus (at 24).
I'd love to quit the day job. I buy Powerball tickets, but I think (hope?) a new congenial opportunity may present itself.
I'll be checking in to see how your watershed is going.
